Why does this yellow flowering shrub have anything to do with Croatia you may ask. The Dalmatian city of Split, Croatia is named after this flowering shrub originating from the ancient Greek colony name of Aspálathos or Spálathos in the 6th. century BC. When the city became a Roman possession in 219 BC the Greek colonies name changed from Aspálathos to Spalatum, which in the middle ages evolved into Spalatro in the Dalmatian language of the city's Romance population. The South Slavic version became Split.
